Oral Health Status of Children in Madagascar

The oral health status of children in the region served by the Madagascar Ankizy Fund is extremely poor.

A study of oral health in the region has shown an average of 3  teeth extracted and 2  teeth filled in children and adolescents. Studies have revealed high rates of both tooth decay and cavities measured by plaque and gingival indices, and periodontal disease.

Poor dental health is worrisome due the connection between oral health and personal well-being, quality of life, mortality, and morbidity including: diabetes, premature birth, and coronary artery disease. It is therefore important to prevent dental health problems, especially for younger vulnerable children.

The director of MAF, Dr. David Krause has however identified that comprehensive Oral Health Education (OHE) remains as one of the most important needs to be met in rural areas of the region.
